My action plan for BRS 10th Graders starts from here.
General Plan
Proposal of the new ESL class
- Set the prologue to a change.
# Teacher should make a proposal of adding young adult literature (YAL) reading to current ESL class.
# All teachers should design the lesson plan through collaboration.
Reading within classroom
- The classroom is a safe place to read and share.
# Teacher should be a good reader, exerting the power of a role model for students.
# Teacher should provide a large selection of qualified YAL books with a wide variety of genres and topics.
# Teacher should have various classroom activities to enhance students' interest and motivation in YAL reading.
# Not only teacher but also students should make recommendation and summary of the good books in each reading class.
Peers' voice matters a lot to young adolescents!
Reading beyond classroom
- Reading should cover every corner of life.
# Students should be given a real purpose of reading: not for tests or grades, but for enriching oneself and sharing with others.
Give students a platform to share their reading experience to audience beyond the classroom.
# Let students raise money to build a classroom book corner by making good use of the used books.
# Teacher could arrange field trips to let students have a more live and exciting experience with reading.
Curriculum Integration
- Let's create a broader reading space for students.
# Writing & Reading
How can the two skills provide mutual benefits in students' language acquisition?
# Digital Literacy & Reading
How can we make good use of the digital tools - a double-edged sword for students' learning?
# Leadership & Reading
How can we cultivate leadership among students in collaborative activities?
# Global Learning & Reading
Can we gain a better understanding of the people and life on the other side of the world through reading?
# Social practice & Reading
Can we find better solution to global issues through reading information from different perspectives?
Reflection
- Learning without reflection is a waste of time.
When both students and teacher have experienced the new changes in ESL class, it is time to reflect on their learning and teaching experience, before they move on to their next step.
Reflection is not merely a summary or a checklist of what you have done, but a chance to give more critical thinking to your past experience with the aim of making a better preparation for the next move.
Reflection is a necessary and beneficial part of learning, and is what we did in all of our courses for the past two semesters.
