How can we make students accept & welcome their extra task in ESL class?
My experience of taking ECI 521 gives me some hints in finding the solution to this question.

#Teacher should model how to be a good reader first.
Students always have a keen eye on their teacher, so teacher's words must be consistent with his or his action.
If the teacher is not a lover of books, how can he expect students to develop this habit and interest?
Remember: student is a mirror of the teacher!
Be a role model & you will be surprised by its power on your students!

# School library should become a comfortable place for qualified reading.
BRS library is not a place that has a large amount of daily visitors.
This phenomenon is caused by several factors.
1) The YALs in the library are not abundant and many are outdated and not attractive for young readers.
2) The teacher seldom arranges time for students to go to the library.
3) The intense class schedule in senior high gives students little energy and time to go to the library.
......
So, the external condition does not facilitate students' cultivation of the reading habit.
Based on this situation, teachers and school leaders should create encouraging forces to make reading resources abundant and attractive for students, and also time available for extensive reading.

# The teacher should make reading materials easily available and widely diversified in the classroom.
In recommending reading resources and preparing reading materials accessible in classroom, teacher should try to include as many genres and topics as possible, as each student is different in their reading preference.
For high school students, a wide variety of choices and the freedom to choose are something that matters.
# Rich classroom activities can encourage students to read more and deeper.
1) For those YALs which have already been shot to films, students can make Book/Film Talk, discussing and comparing the story shown in words and that in the camera.
Let students experience the power of words.
Let them become the artists to create their artistic work, like poster, handout or sound track, etc.
An example of Book/Film Talk about Flipped, created in ECI 521.
2) For those YALs which have not been shot to films yet, students can collaborate to make digital Book Trailer and put it on various social media to make public recommendation.
Below is an example of Digital Book Trailer for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, created for ECI 521.
3) For those currently banned/challenged YALs, students can write a rationale to school librarians, helping them to decide whether these books are dangerous or not.
An example of writing Rationale for banned/challenged YALs for Two Boys Kissing, created for ECI 521.

4) For students who have similar reading interest, they can form a reading club, and arrange weekly peer conference for sharing and reflection, and create their unique list of recommendation.
Each group could arrange regular time to give TED talk to other groups, based on the reading they have done, a new and engaging way to arouse students interest to read, share and present.
An example of our TED talk in ECI 620.

# In every reading class, the teacher should give students a chance to make YAL recommendation, sharing and reflection, based on their reading experience.
Sometimes, for teenagers, peers' voice sounds louder than that of teacher's.
